As we have been following the rise of steel and other raw materials it is interesting to note the overall attitude in our industry. The more we as importers and the Manufacturer’s of steel products inform our customer base’s at large about the worldwide situation, the more we find that there are companies out their listening and being proactive about these problems. When material costs increases cause prices to rise over 25% in less than 6 months, there is no way any company can absorb such large cost increases. Giving distributors and end user customers the most up to date information allows them to plan ahead more effectively thus not creating a panic or fear in the marketplace.
We must continue to watch how the oil and gas crises affects our industry. Shipping costs have risen so fast and far the past 3 years that we now watch and monitor closely the Monthly Fuel Surcharge announcement. Many in the industry are talking about whether or not we need to add a fuel surcharge even to our prepaid orders.
I open this subject to you. What are your thoughts on how to handle the ever increasing costs of fuel and transportation? Is a fuel surcharge fair to pass on to customers even if we agree to pay for freight? How would a fuel surcharge impact your business?
