Challenge
Winner!
Last week we
issued a challenge to "stump our experts" with a
question about woodworking fasteners. Bob Thomas
of Cherry Hill, NJ did
it.
Question: What
simple tool or principle is every wood screw fashioned
from?
Answer: The
simple tool is the "lever". A screw, if unrolled
and flat, looks like a wedge. This screw
wedge, when turned into the material, works as a
continuous lever. Instead of an "up" or "down"
motion, however, twisting is the applied power and the
movement of the screw head inward is the work.
Friction is what keeps it in place. The principle
is really a mixture of physics and
sawdust.
Congratulations,
Bob! We appreciate the education and your
response.
